This beautiful orchid was photographed at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida. This species, Vanda sanderiana, from the Philippines, has four to six inch flowers and is found in violet, purple and chocolate coloring. Commonly called ‘Waling-waling’ in the Philippines, this orchid has been referred to as the “Queen of the Philippine Orchids” and is the logo for the Philippine Orchid Society. The species was named in 1882 after Henry Frederick Sander, a noted nurseryman and orchidologist. Through his tireless efforts to find new species of orchids and evaluate new hybrids, Sander accumulated one of the finest collections of orchids to be found in Europe in the late 1880’s and was the center of Europe’s orchid culture.
